Churches in Žuljana

There are several churches in Žuljana. It is a very pleasant walk to all of them. The baroque church of St. Martin, which was built on the foundations of a medieval church (the Acroterion shield of the 15th c. is probably from the original building), is the largest and most used of them. From the church, there are beautiful views towards the village, which is at your fingertips, as well as wonderful evening sunsets. Nearby is the chapel of St. Nicholas from 1630. In the center of the village you can admire the church of St. Roc-Juliana with the bell tower. The Church of Our Lady of Sorrows, which rises above the beaches of Kremena and Vućine, offers unique views of both bays, opposite beaches and, if visibility is good, also of nearby Korčula and the island of Lastovo.

Sports enjoyment

There are good opportunities for sea fishing in Vućine Bay and several other smaller bays.

Žuljana has excellent conditions for diving, the wreck of the torpedo boat S 57 from World War II is of interest, which should not be missed by any diver who loves wrecks. It originally measured 34 m in length, about 5 m in width and had a draft of 1.4 m. It accommodated 21 men. This type of ship was produced in 1940 and served the Germans in World War II. As you can see, it was not always a successful move. The torpedo boat has been decaying here since September 1944.

There is also the possibility of renting kayaks, on which it is wonderful, especially in the morning, when the sea is still calm, to drive around the surrounding coast and fully enjoy the local beauty of the crystal clear sea, pine groves, vineyards on the slopes and clean, fragrant air.

There is a freely accessible concrete playground in Žuljana, which can be used for soccer, basketball, tennis, or inline skating. More experienced riders can go on a 5.5 km long route along the sea coast towards Trstenik. It can also be used for running. Overall, Žuljana is very suitable for runners and everyone can find their own route here.

Hike to St. Ivan

A hike that is really worth it is the hike to the highest mountain above Žuljana, St. Ivan Hill (469m). From the top there is a wonderful view of the entire village, the nearby island of Mljet, and with good visibility also Lastovo and Korčula. It is about a 5 km marked route.

Please note that the hike to Ivan is recommended in good weather. Plenty of water is a must in hot weather, and suitable, sturdy footwear is also important!

Tips for trips to the area

Ston

Ston is a town located at the beginning of the Pelješac peninsula, about 25 km from Žuljana. The longest stone wall in Europe is located here, 5.5 km long, more than a kilometer of walls immediately surrounding the city are accessible to tourists.

Among the monuments, you can also visit the pre-Romanesque church of St. Michael on the hill above Stone, the Prince's Palace, the Bishop's Palace, the Sorkočević Palace, the Franciscan Monastery with the Church of St. Martin, the buildings of the administrative bodies of the Republic of Dubrovnik, etc. Most of these buildings, built in the Gothic-Renaissance and Renaissance styles, suffered major damage during the earthquake at the end of the 20th century, which have so far only been partially repaired and work is still ongoing.

On the outskirts of Ston stands Veliki Kaštio, the most massive fortress of the Ston fortifications, forming the southwestern end of the fortress system.

Dingač Tunnel, Potomje

Then, about 15 km away is the center of the Dingač wine region. A tunnel leads from Potomje towards the coast, 400 m long, single-track, unlit. The tunnel opens on a slope above the sea in the Dingač locality.

The slopes extend above the settlement of Potočine towards Prisoje bay. They are planted with an autochthonous type of vine, plavac mali crni, which is processed into the best branded wine Dingač (protected by the brand since 1961), has an alcohol content of 14%. The tunnel facilitated the access of winegrowers to the vineyards above the sea, but nowadays it also allows tourists to reach the coast by car, to the settlements of Borak and Potočine. The local beaches are extremely charming, the nature very well preserved, the sea very clean.

Right in Potomje there are a number of wine cellars with the possibility of tasting and possibly buying.

Orebić, Korčula

Orebić is a popular larger resort on the so-called Captain's Riviera on the south-west coast of the peninsula, by the Pelješsk Strait opposite the town of Korčula, on the opposite island of the same name. There are regular boat connections from Orebić to Korčula to the port directly in the old town.

In the past, Orebić was an important seafaring center that brought prosperity to the population. When sailing ships were replaced by steamships, the city's heyday ended. The exhibition houses of former rich ship captains, who settled here for decades to rest, give Orebić a specific character. They were surrounded by gardens with lots of foreign vegetation. In Orebić, you can also visit the Parish Marian Church, dating from the 19th century. Above Orebić at a height of 150 m stands the Gothic-Renaissance Franciscan monastery with the 15th-century church of St. Mary of the Angels, which houses a collection of art objects. It is visited primarily for the beautiful view.

And finally, we definitely recommend a visit to the local Oáza ice cream shop, which is located right in the port, near the Maritime Museum, which is also worth a visit.

The town of Korčula with its port needs no introduction. It is a popular resort and a frequently visited excursion destination on the northeastern coast of the island of Korčula. It belongs to the most valuable urban conservation areas on the Croatian coast.

Trpanj

The smaller village on the northern coast of Pelješka, Trpanj, is certainly worth a visit. In the past it was the main port of the peninsula, now there is a ferry from Ploče on the mainland, whose arrivals and departures are a nice experience, especially for children. The dominant feature of the port is the statue of the Virgin Mary Star of the Sea on the rock in front of the port, which according to tradition is the protector of fishermen and sailors.

6.5 km west of Trpanje is the picturesque bay Divna, which stands out for its beautiful pebble beach, but its bottom is sandy. Those who want to enjoy a beautiful swim can park by the road above the bay and walk down the narrow footpath.

Luka Dubrava

A nice trip is also to the village of Luka Dubrava, which is a picturesque resort located in a shallow bay with a warm sea and a pebble beach on the edge of an olive grove, approx. 4 km from the resort of Drače and the resort village of Janjina, halfway between the towns of Ston and Orebić. In addition to the ever-present tranquility, Konoba Glavor is also located here.

This is a small family business in a pleasant environment very close to the sea, with a direct view of it. A truly pleasant, friendly, family environment awaits you in this tavern, where you can enjoy gastronomic experiences. It offers you completely fresh and mostly self-caught fish, crawfish, octopus, mussels, oysters, cuttlefish, squid, local meat specialties made from lamb, pork and veal from local farms, prepared for you according to traditional Dalmatian recipes from domestic or local ingredients.

Dubrovník

Dubrovnik is the second largest Croatian city and is called the Pearl of the Adriatic. It is definitely worth a visit! It is one of the most valuable historical complexes in South-Eastern Europe, which is why Dubrovnik was already included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979.
